Ho Ho Humbug

For many people the holidays are not all Silent Nights and Winter Wonderlands.  It can be hard to stay jolly when you want to Bah Humbug over packed parking lots or the stretching of the all-mighty dollar.   And baby it’s cold outside and after holiday parties, cookie exchanges and the usual revelry, there may be more than one Sugar Plum dancing on your (um) sugared bum.

It’s enough to make you, well, make like a bear and bury yourself in a hole until it’s over.  If that’s you, here’s my oh so ungentle reminder that now is NOT the time to hibernate from your fitness routine.  Dig out and get moving.

Here is a short, super fun list of things you can do to help manage your health and stress levels over the holidays.

  • Set your alarm 15 minutes earlier and do something physical.  (No, walking to the bathroom and back to bed does not count.)
  • Escape the office and take a walk at lunch (even if it’s only for an oft-derided amble).
  • Go ice skating.   How fun is that?!?!
  • Dance to holiday music while cleaning the house or while the kids are decorating the gingerbread house.
  • Go to http://www.yogajournal.com and do 10 or 15 minutes of yoga.
  • If stress is hitting you harder than those reindeers playing games, go for a run.  A fast one.  Amping up the intensity forces you to only think about the task at hand.  Try it.  I promise that you can’t think about what to make for holiday dinner when you are pushing at a high intensity level.  All you’ll be able to think about is “Dear baby Jesus, am I done yet?”.

Then when January rolls around you can be damn straight that you won’t be rolling around with it.

Until then, stay holiday, my friends.

Now go run!

Keli 🙂
