Quote of the Week

Courtesy of Runner’s World!  Because sometimes we need motivation from the experts!

“Working hard becomes a habit, a serious kind of fun. You get self-satisfaction from pushing yourself to the limit, knowing that all the effort is going to pay off. ”

Mary Lou Retton, winner of the All Around Gold Medal in women’s gymnastics at the 1984 Olympic Games

Happy Birthday To Me!!

Today is my 45th birthday!

And while I have some wrinkles I’m not thrilled with, some sun spots from summers  spent with just a spritz  of  SPF 2, and more silver on my head that I’d care to admit, I feel fit, strong and full of energy and excited.

A birthday would be useless without family and friends so I’m extra-super-duper lucky because I’m blessed with a remarkable family and some pretty awesome friends!  Love you guys!

3 Things I Love About Trail Running

Continuing our love-fest with running…we move onto my adoration for trail running!  In a nod to Andy Cohen of Watch What Happens Live!  Here’s what 3 things I’m obsessed with about trail running!

Speed is Irrelevant

When running trails it’s perfectly fine to ditch the watch.  Forget your normal pace, your splits, any PR that you’ve had in any race of your life. Run swiftly like a gazelle or plod along at a snail’s pace.  You are still getting a killer workout.

Getting Dirty

I admit to being a big running geek and am not ashamed to say that when I see mud splatters and dirt above the line of my socks I feel like a superstar.  Running on trails is the equivalent to a toddler stomping in rain puddles!

Hills, Hills, and More Hills

When climbing a big hill or running up switchbacks you can comfort yourself with the knowledge that once you get to the top you get to go down eventually.   But for me, going up the hill is the treat because I just love running hard, hilly trails.

Three Things I Like About Running!

As I dash out the door for a trail run I wanted to share the 3 things I like about running.  Trust me, there are more than 3 but let’s keep it simple!

1.  It feels good.  Once you get past the first few miles, that is.

2. You can get a quality workout in as little as 30 minutes.  Push yourself up some hills and break a good sweat and that 30 minutes is gold.

3.  Seeing runners running makes me want to go for a run.  I don’t care if you are clocking a 12 min or 7 min mile – if you are out there running,  I want to join you.

Quality Training

So my marathon training hit a snag this week.    I was supposed to get in two 5 mile runs earlier this week but my schedule only allowed for a few 3 mile runs instead.  So instead of fussing over it or skipping them altogether because my plan was falling apart I decided to make those two runs the best 3 miles possible.

I included some killer hills and made sure I pushed hard.  The distance wasn’t what I planned but I did get some quality runs and made every step count.   On to the 12 miler this weekend!
